The humiliation and whipping of Christ preceded the crucifixion. His torture continued on the cross.<\/p>\n<p>Christ, who died on the cross, was buried and resurrected from the dead (see Christ the Invincible), is often depicted together with angels bearing the attributes of his martyrdom \u2013 a whip, a hammer and nails, pikes and a crown of thorns, a ladder, a column and a sponge filled with vinegar \u2013 and symbolising heaven and the everlasting life that follows life on
