Ornamentation

Featured_ornament

Ackermann had previously carved the exquisite flower motifs used in the Märjamaa Church retable for the living room door portal in the house belonging to the merchant Höppner in Tallinn, for the Vigala Church retable, and for various coat-of-arms epitaphs.

Twisting bunches of grapes, lilies, tulips, roses, sunflowers, palm branches, etc. can be recognised in surviving photographs. Two fish on the decorated frame around the altar painting held in their mouths a flower garland decorated with grapevines.

Surfaces finished using various cutting techniques have been combined for finishing the sculptures and ornamentation: smooth surfaces reflect light, surfaces with hatching carved using parallel lines depict hairy or coarse textures, and hollows of varying depths have been cut and hollowed out to increase the relief effect.
