The Calvaries of Kullamaa Church and Tallinn’s Cathedral

The Calvary completed in 1694 for Tallinn’s Cathedral offers the best possibility for comparison with the Calvary at Kullamaa Church. The two groups of sculptures share several features in common – especially regarding the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist, but also regarding the figure of Christ.

A more rotund, livelier depiction of the Christ at Kullamaa, and his loincloth waving in the ‘breeze’, which required a technically complicated solution from the sculptor: garment details were added to the whole, distinguishing it from the figures of Christ at Koeru Church and Tallinn’s Cathedral.
