Ackermann’s female figures – Faith, Hope and Love – conform to baroque era ideals of beauty. Comparison of these figures with the theological virtues of the Martna Church retable, which was completed sixteen years after the Simuna retable, shows the extent to which their types remained constant, in other words invariable, in time.
