Sculptures made by Ackermann’s assistants
The Vigala Church pulpit was fashioned at about the same time as the independent master Christian Ackermann was occupied with carving the figural and ornamental décor of the Vigala Church retable.
Judging by the types and cutting lines of the statues on the pulpit’s corpus and sounding board, Ackermann did not carve the pulpit’s sculptures. Most of them were carved according to drawings used in the master’s workshop or by one of the master’s assistants alongside the master.
Sometimes the journeyman who carved the pulpit’s figures followed the master’s example exactly, at other times he followed the example more freely. Comparison of the pulpit’s statues of St. Peter, St. Paul, and Christ the Invincible with the corresponding figures carved by Ackermann on the Vigala Church retable vividly demonstrates this.
