The damage to St. Paul’s hand evidently dates from the 19th century. Namely, the fingers of St. Paul’s right hand, which holds a book, could have been broken when the statue was torn down from the retable in the panic caused by the fire that broke out in the church in 1831. When the figure was returned to the retable, however, new fingertips were carved for the two mutilated middle fingers of St. Paul’s hand (without cutting off the fingertips that remained attached to the book cover, in other words without smoothing over the cover).
