The cavity within the statue of St. Paul merits attention. The hollowing out of the wooden blocks that were carved into statues (with the aim of improved preservation of the sculptures), which was so characteristic of medieval master sculptors, had not been observed in the case of works by Ackermann that have been studied to date. The hollow within the statue of St. Paul at Simuna evidently came into being because a knot in one wooden block that had been glued together (the use of ‘glued wood’, as has been repeatedly highlighted, was usual in the case of Ackermann) had fallen out of its side.
