What was the pulpit’s original polychromy like?
The pulpit has been repainted repeatedly, for which reason part of its original polychromy is concealed or has perished. Some of the later coats of paint have been removed in the course of restoration work (for instance from the stair balustrade panel paintings) and other paint layers have not been removed. A secondary coat of paint distorts the figures carved by Christian Ackermann, as well as by Lüdert Heissmann, with hands and feet that were originally flesh tone, and with faces and colourful garments painted in detail.
